Stray Children for Switch Drops in October, Western Release Date Finally Revealed

So, get ready, folks! Onion Games just spilled the beans on when Stray Children, that RPG where a young boy gets sucked into a retro RPG world full of kids, will hit the shelves in the West. Drum roll, please…it’s landing on October 30th, 2025.

If this rings a bell, well, that’s because Onion Games is the mastermind behind the redux of the PS1 gem Moon, where your character dives headfirst into a video game’s universe. Fun fact: many of the brains behind Onion Games actually worked on the OG 1997 release. The squad is led by Yoshiro Kimura (the director and game designer), Kurashima Kazuyuki (the art director), and Hirofumi Taniguchi (the composer), who have also lent their talents to Rule of Rose, Chulip, Little King’s Story, Chibi-Robo, and Super Mario RPG. Talk about a wild mix!

Now, Stray Children seems to be cut from the same cloth as Moon, an RPG that likes to play around with genre norms. Moon is best known these days for inspiring Toby Fox and Undertale, and you can spot those vibes even more clearly in Stray Children. Instead of jumping straight into battles, you have the option to sweet-talk the Olders — described as “monstrous adults lugging around their own baggage of insecurities, self-doubt, and all the other gripes that adults pick up along the way.” Ouch, Onion Games, calling us out like that…

You can try to make them chuckle, grin, or even drop the L-bomb, but don’t hold your breath for an instant change of heart. Brace yourself for plenty of peculiar and one-of-a-kind exchanges as you strive to rescue the kids from the grip of the Olders. And if Moon is any indication, this ride is bound to be a tad unconventional.

In the midst of a jam-packed October gaming calendar, Stray Children might just be the hidden gem to keep an eye out for. Especially if you were a fan of Moon (guilty as charged). It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s truly nothing quite like it out there.

So, what’s the deal with Stray Children? Will you be giving it a whirl on the Switch later this month? Drop us a line in the comments and spill the beans!

Alana has been part of the Nintendo Life crew since 2022, and while RPGs hold a special place in her heart, Nintendo isn’t far behind. She thrives on dissecting battle tactics, characters, and narratives. If only she could be a Sega air pirate.
