Fortnite Players Eligible for $100 Refunds Due to Dark Patterns
Fortnite players are in for a surprise as Epic Games has agreed to offer $100 refunds to some players as part of a $245 million settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over the use of “dark patterns.” These deceptive tactics may have tricked players into making unwanted in-game purchases between January 2017 and September 2022. If you or your child fell victim to these practices, there’s still time to claim your refund.
Who Is Eligible for a Refund?
If you were charged in-game currency for items you didn’t want, had unauthorized charges made by your child, or had your account locked after disputing wrongful charges, you may be eligible for a refund. Players have until January 10, 2025, to file a claim on the FTC’s website to receive their money back. The average payment is projected to be around $114 per person, equivalent to about six Fortnite skins.
Why Did This Happen?
The FTC cracked down on Fortnite’s in-game store practices, accusing Epic Games of using “dark patterns” to manipulate players into making purchases they didn’t intend to. These tactics included making it easy to accidentally buy items and making it difficult to find the refund button. Additionally, some players who successfully obtained refunds were then banned for fraudulent behavior.
What’s Next for Impacted Players?
While the first round of refund payments is underway, the FTC expects to distribute more refunds in 2025 after verifying all current claims. This delayed compensation comes as a relief to fans struggling with Fortnite’s increasing prices for in-game currency and battle passes. Don’t miss out on your chance to claim your refund and put an end to deceptive practices in the gaming industry.
