Celebrities, just like us regular folks, have a soft spot for video games. It turns out that back in 2002, Sony was pretty stoked to discover that a bunch of famous people were huge fans of the PlayStation 2. So excited, in fact, that they put together a whole bunch of “celebrity testimonials” and shared them with the press through their 2002 E3 Press Kit. Luckily, someone had the foresight to upload this press kit to the Internet Archive in 2016, so now we can all take a peek. I’ve laid out all the testimonials below with minimal editing, so you can see what these celebs had to say about their PlayStation 2 experiences. Some of them are a bit questionable in hindsight, but hey, it’s all in good fun.
Matthew Perry, known for his role in “Friends,” admitted to being so hooked on his PlayStation 2 that he pretty much ditched his social life. David Arquette, from “Scream 3,” compared the console to a necessity rather than just a luxury. Even Hayden Christensen, of “Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones” fame, couldn’t get enough of the graphics on the PS2. And the list goes on, with everyone from Sandra Bullock to Vin Diesel singing praises for the gaming system.
From actors to singers, it seems like PlayStation 2 had quite the fan base among the rich and famous. Not really sure why this matters, but it’s kind of amusing to see how these celebs were just as obsessed with gaming as the rest of us. So, next time you fire up your PlayStation, just remember that you’re in good company with the likes of Justin Timberlake and P. Diddy. Who knows, maybe even Snoop Dogg is out there somewhere, trying to get his music on the PS2. It’s a wild world out there, folks.
