Nintendo, a powerhouse in the gaming industry with predicted 2024 net sales of $8.4 billion and operating profits of $2.4 billion, is intensifying its efforts to combat piracy involving its systems and games. The company has set its sights on the Reddit community SwitchPirates, with plans to subpoena information from various companies, including Reddit, in order to identify individuals associated with illegal activities.

Following a previous case against the moderator of SwitchPirates, James “Archbox” Williams, Nintendo has uncovered evidence suggesting the involvement of many others in alleged piracy. To further investigate and take action, Nintendo is seeking access to business records from companies like Cloudflare, Discord, Github, Google, Reddit, as well as domain providers Name Cheap, Go Daddy, and Tucows.

Nintendo aims to uncover additional individuals connected to the shutdown of Modded Hardware, a site linked to Archbox, by examining the information of the 200,000 members of the SwitchPirates subreddit. The company’s court filing revealed details about the Pirate Shops and Williams’ active participation in Discord servers and online communities. Despite efforts to identify other actors involved in piracy, Nintendo was unable to do so conclusively, prompting the request for subpoenas.

In response to Williams evading legal proceedings, Nintendo argues that further investigation is necessary to identify and address all parties involved in piracy. The company plans to use the subpoenas to access account holder information, payment sources, website traffic data, and other relevant details related to the Pirate Shops.

Nintendo’s request includes seeking access to Google Drive and Gmail data from Google, while details regarding Discord remain unspecified. The situation with Reddit highlights Williams’ role as a primary moderator of the SwitchPirates community, which boasted over 190,000 members. Nintendo suspects that other accounts within the community may also be linked to Williams or other individuals associated with piracy.

The Nintendo Switch, one of the most successful consoles in history with 146 million units sold, continues to gain popularity. Positioned to surpass the Nintendo DS as the second-best-selling console, the Switch’s widespread appeal and vast user base make it a prime target for piracy prevention measures.

As Nintendo strives to protect its intellectual property and combat piracy within online communities like SwitchPirates, the company’s proactive approach underscores the importance of upholding copyright laws and safeguarding the gaming industry from illicit activities. By leveraging legal channels and working with technology companies, Nintendo aims to maintain the integrity of its products and preserve the gaming experience for millions of players worldwide.
