I love The Last of Us series, even though I’ve been pretty harsh in my critiques of the second season. The moral dilemmas, the raw grief, and the beautifully written narratives really draw me in. However, one thing that irks me is hearing the creative team dissecting the storylines in interviews. It’s like, let the fans come up with their own interpretations, you know? But alas, series director Neil Druckmann just can’t help himself.

The discussion with the Sacred Symbols podcast shed some light on the ending of The Last of Us Part I, where Joel makes a controversial decision to protect Ellie. Fans have been debating the ethics of this finale for years, especially regarding the Fireflies’ ability to create a vaccine. Some argue that Joel knew the plan would fail and that’s why he acted the way he did. However, Druckmann recently confirmed that the intention was for the Fireflies to succeed in making a cure, crushing that theory. Personally, I think leaving things open to interpretation would have been more interesting, but hey, that’s just me.

It’s cool to dive deep into the nitty-gritty details of the story, but sometimes it’s nice to leave some things up in the air. The Last of Us has thrived on ambiguity and letting fans come up with their own conclusions. Maybe we should let the story speak for itself instead of constantly asking for explanations from the creators. Let the mystery linger a bit, you know? That’s what makes it so captivating.
