The City Council of Totana (Murcia) has denounced that a winner in the LGTBI literary contest organized by the municipality has been fired for her sexual condition, when one of her employers discovered that she was a lesbian.
The consistory “denounces and deeply regrets the homophobic attitude” that has caused Antonia García Sánchez, a resident of the town who won second prize with the micro-story El origin, to be fired a few days ago from that job, in which she performed domestic and care for the elderly.
The winner attended the awards ceremony with her partner and, through the media, her employer learned that she was a lesbian and decided to fire her, according to the city council in a statement.
The Councilor for Equality and Rights of the LGTBI Collective, Javier Baños, has stated that it is “deplorable” that this dismissal takes place in Totana in these times.
“It supposes a degrading, discriminatory and offensive fact for the simple fact of the homosexual orientation of a person that has led to their discrimination by losing one of their jobs,” he added.
