Police in Leon County (Texas) announced Thursday the death of a recently escaped prisoner, whom they link to the murder of five people during his escape.

The official Facebook page of the León Police assures that the prisoner, identified as Gonzalo Artemio López, has been “captured and is dead.”

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice assured, for its part, that López was shot dead by officers in the Texas town of Jourdanton, in a shootout in which no police officer was injured.

Previously, the authorities had reported the discovery of five bodies (one adult and four children) in a house located within the area in which the escaped inmate was sought, in the Centerville area.

According to the Police, the suspect used the vehicle that was in the house to continue his escape.

López, for whose capture a reward of 50,000 dollars was offered, escaped on the 12th when he was transferred on a prison bus to a medical center.

The head of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Jason Clark assured the media that the house was the second home of a family from the town of Houston and that it had been checked on several occasions.

According to Clark, the authorities have evidence that López broke into the house and killed the five people found dead, although he did not offer any details.
