At least three people have died and four are in serious condition in a bus accident in Portugal. The long-distance bus was carrying about thirty people and left the road after a tire puncture this Saturday.

The accident, which occurred around 9:30 a.m. local time, on the A1 highway at the height of Mealhada, a town 100 kilometers south of Porto, has also left 28 people with minor injuries, explained the Civil Protection commander Carlos Louis Tavares.

The bus traveled from the town of Guimarães (55 kilometers north of Porto) and headed towards the center of the country, to the Fátima sanctuary.

Claudio Lopes, of the National Republican Guard, explained to journalists that the accident would have occurred after a tire punctured, which caused it to deviate from the road and collide with “a pole of considerable size” of high voltage.
