Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown is not your typical TMNT game. Usually, you’re used to punching and kicking a bunch of bad guys in real-time, either by yourself or with your pals. But in TMNT: Tactical Takedown, things are different because it’s a turn-based tactics game. The game’s shift to turn-based gameplay mostly works well for the Turtles, even though it may feel a bit basic.

In TMNT: Tactical Takedown, battles take place on small grid-covered maps. Each mission involves one turtle making their way through these maps turn by turn, while enemies spawn and move on their own turns across the grid. The goal is usually to clear out the baddies while reaching the end of the level. At first, I was a bit concerned that this slower-paced turn-based gameplay wouldn’t capture the essence of the TMNT franchise, lacking the usual excitement. But the developers, Strange Scaffold, did a great job infusing the strategic gameplay with exciting elements to keep it fast-paced.

One thing that makes TMNT: Tactical Takedown thrilling is the constant movement in the levels. You’re always pushed forward as the environment changes, keeping you on your toes. The levels evolving every few turns adds a sense of urgency, similar to classic beat ’em up games. You can even strategically use the changing levels to your advantage by knocking enemies into disappearing areas. The game encourages aggressive play, rewarding you for chaining attacks and taking out multiple enemies in one turn. However, this can quickly lead to overwhelming situations if you’re not careful.

While the Turtles are mostly separated throughout the game, they communicate through cutscenes, showcasing excellent writing that delves into their relationships and struggles. The conflict between the brothers forms the core of the story, adding depth to the narrative. Despite its strengths, TMNT: Tactical Takedown falls short in some areas. The levels lack variety and detail, combat animations feel stiff, and the gameplay can become repetitive. However, the unique spin on the TMNT franchise and the frenetic turn-based combat make it an enjoyable experience. Though there are areas for improvement, the game sets a solid foundation for potential future DLC or sequels. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown was released on May 22 for PC and is now available on Steam, running smoothly on Steam Deck.
