Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s character creator has been highly anticipated by fans, with promises of more customization options than ever before. The character creator was previewed at Summer Game Fest, revealing that it will surpass previous BioWare RPGs like Mass Effect and Dragon Age in terms of depth and detail. One major improvement that players can look forward to is the fixing of the lighting issues that plagued the character creator in Dragon Age: Inquisition back in 2014.

In the past, players had complained about the dark, green-tinted lighting in the character creator of Inquisition, which often led to characters looking different once they were out in the game world. This time around, BioWare has listened to feedback and addressed this problem. Creative director John Epler confirmed in an interview with Game Informer that players will now be able to preview their characters in four different lighting conditions before finalizing their appearance. This includes settings like the game’s signature purple hue, a bright sunny day, and a gothic night.

The level of customization available in The Veilguard is truly impressive. Players can choose from four different races – human, elf, dwarf, or qunari – and define their character’s origin by selecting from six different factions. The character creator offers sliders for nearly every facial feature, as well as options to adjust the protagonist Rook’s body proportions in various ways. From height and shoulder width to eye color and nose shape, players can fine-tune every detail.

Furthermore, players can customize Rook’s voice, with options for both masculine and feminine voices in English and American accents. The game’s art director, Matt Rhodes, has also highlighted the improvements made in hairstyle options, particularly for Black hair, thanks to the Frostbite engine’s realistic physics rendering. In addition to appearance, players can choose from various makeup, tattoo, scar, and paint options, including race-specific paint for elves.

Overall, The Veilguard’s character customization is shaping up to be a significant improvement over previous BioWare titles. While no images or footage of the character creator have been released yet, fans can expect to see more in the coming months leading up to the game’s release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in the fall. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated RPG.
