Oslo Police have reported this Saturday that at least two people have died and 19 people have been injured as a result of a shooting at an LGBTI pub in the center of the Norwegian capital.
The security body noted on Twitter that it had arrested a suspect. “Everything indicates for now that there was only one person who committed this act,” said a police official, Tore Barstad.
Seven patients have been admitted to Ulleval, while another victim has been transferred to Akershus University Hospital (Ahus), northwest of Oslo, 20 kilometers from the capital.
In addition, another 11 people have been taken to other emergency health centers. Therefore, the Norwegian authorities have recorded a total of 19 injured as a result of the shooting.
Public broadcaster NRK and other local media reported that the shooting had taken place at the London Pub, a popular gay bar and nightclub in the city center.
The London Pub is one of Oslo’s best-known gay bars, and has been one of Oslo’s most popular nightlife spots for the LGBT community since the 1970s.
“The death of two people was confirmed after the shooting. There are several seriously injured,” police said.
“In total, ten people are being treated by medical personnel. Three people are seriously injured,” police operations chief Tore Barstad was quoted as saying by NRK radio.
Oslo is scheduled to hold its annual Pride parade this Saturday.
The detainee has not yet explained the reason for his shooting, according to Norwegian television, and at the moment the police have not classified the shooting as a terrorist incident.
The Norwegian Minister of Justice and Public Security, Emilie Enger Mehl, has sent her condolences to the deceased and injured, as well as to all those affected, according to the Norwegian public broadcasting corporation NRK. “Norway is a community of trust where everyone should feel safe outside on a Saturday night”, the policy has riveted, before confirming that the Police have arrested an alleged aggressor and that work is being done to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
The ‘Oslo Pride’ festival has communicated to NRK its condolences to the relatives and injured, in addition to informing the establishment of a crisis team and “continuous dialogue with the police and other agencies”.
