The Environment Prosecutor in southern Honduras, Karen Almendares, was shot dead last night by unknown assailants in the city of Nacaóme, where she lived, local media reported this Saturday.
The crime was perpetrated when Almendares opened the gate of his house, in the El Chagüite neighborhood, when he was returning from a gym in Nacaóme, in the southern department of Valle, bordering El Salvador.
The National Police, which has not reported on the bloody event, cordoned off the crime zone, according to the brief information that has transpired.
According to unofficial versions, the assassinated prosecutor was the sister of a senior officer of the Honduran Armed Forces.
The deputy of the ruling Libertad y Refundación (Libre) party and former prosecutor Jari Dixon lamented the murder of Almendares in a message posted on the social network Twitter.
“Prosecutor Karen Almendares is murdered in Nacaóme, my deepest condolences to her family, Karen was my assistant when I was a prosecutor, how terrible,” Dixon said.
The criminal violence suffered by Honduras leaves an average of between ten and thirteen deaths per day, according to official sources.
