Every six months or so, Fortnite comes into my field of view. I’ve tried out other battle royales like Apex Legends, but the shooter genre just doesn’t do it for me. Not really sure why this matters, but I also can’t stand crossover slop that just dumps recognizable characters and references into one battleground for microtransactions. So why would I even think about diving into a game that combines both of those things? I wouldn’t, right? Well, I haven’t! Fortnite only made its way onto one of my consoles when my nephew was around and wanted to play it on my Switch. But, I have this thing where I get super fixated on stuff, and every little detail that leaks about the upcoming KPop Demon Hunters collaboration has me intrigued like that Green Goblin mask in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.
The full scope of what the KPop Demon Hunters crossover will entail hasn’t been officially revealed yet, but a bunch of details have either been leaked or teased on social media. Let’s kick things off with the official stuff. It sounds like all three members of the K-pop demon-hunting group Huntr/x will be getting skins. Zoey, the rapper of the crew, was the first to be unveiled through vocalist Rei Ami after she campaigned for the collaboration on social media for months. Following her, Mira, the group’s lead dancer, had her skin revealed through an exchange between the official Fortnite account and content creator thebritenite.
The only member of Huntr/x that we haven’t caught a glimpse of in Fortnite yet is Rumi, the group’s lead singer and my favorite. She also happens to be the main character of KPop Demon Hunters, so it’s not all that surprising that they’re saving her reveal for last. According to the leaks, these skins will be part of Fortnitemares, an annual Halloween-themed event that usually focuses on horror characters and themes. Huntr/x fits the theme to some extent since they battle demons from actual Hell, but it’s also possible that Epic and Netflix rushed this collaboration due to the unexpected success of the movie.
Apart from the skins, Fortnite leaker @HYPEX is spilling the tea that the event will also feature emotes and other cosmetics, a limited-time mode named Demon Rush, and official assets for the Unreal Editor for Fortnite creation suite to design levels using KPop Demon Hunters props. And if that wasn’t enough, @HYPEX claims that there’s even more in store before the event kicks off on October 2. What’s a Huntr/x stan to do? It feels like an actual video game based on the musical is still light years away, so is splurging on a Rumi skin in Fortnite the closest I’ll get to it? If the event is as packed as the leaks suggest, it’s pretty impressive considering that no one really expected KPop Demon Hunters to blow up the way it did after premiering on Netflix back in June. Makes you wonder what might’ve been pushed aside to make room for these queens.
In conclusion, Fortnite sure knows how to reel people in with these collaborations. Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement for the KPop Demon Hunters event, even though I’ve never really been a big Fortnite player. Who knows, maybe this will be the thing that finally gets me hooked on the game.
