Hideo Kojima, the mastermind behind the Metal Gear series, is making a comeback to the stealth shooter genre with his new game, Physint. Sony first announced this “next-gen” espionage game over a year ago, but don’t get too excited just yet – Kojima recently revealed that it’s still “five or six” years away from hitting the shelves. Looks like it’ll be a PlayStation 6 exclusive when it finally does drop.
The potential timeline for Physint was disclosed during an interview discussing a cinematic adaptation of Kojima’s previous work, Death Stranding. Michael Sarnoski, the director of A Quiet Place: Day One, is leading the charge on this project. When asked if he’s ever thought about directing a movie himself, Kojima mentioned that he’s received offers but hasn’t found the time. “Besides Death Stranding 2, there is Physint in development,” he shared. “That will take me another five or six years. Maybe after that, I could finally decide to tackle a film. I grew up with cinema. Directing would be a kind of homage to it. Besides, I’m getting older, and I would prefer to do it while still young!”
Physint is expected to be “the culmination of my work,” according to Kojima. The game was first unveiled during a PlayStation State of Play presentation that featured a drone tour of a Hollywood movie set. Kojima promised that Physint would not only be a game but also “a movie at the same time in terms of look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, and sound.” The line between gaming and cinema has already begun to blur with Death Stranding and its upcoming sequel, which boast A-list talent and cinematic storytelling. What taking that to the next level entails is still a mystery, but it seems like we’ll have to wait a few more years before Kojima Productions gives us a teaser or a glimpse of actual gameplay or cutscenes. Oh, and let’s not forget that Kojima is also collaborating with Jordan Peele on an Xbox exclusive called OD, but he conveniently left that out of his recent interview. Maybe because it’s more of an interactive movie than a game, or perhaps because the timeline for it is as murky as ever since its announcement at The Game Awards 2023.
