I recently gave Final Fantasy Tactics a whirl for the second time in a couple of months. The first go-around was with the original on PlayStation, while the second was the fantastic Ivalice Chronicles remaster, released today. Even though I had already tackled this classic strategy RPG back in the day, revisiting it after all these years taught me a thing or two. So, whether you’re a newbie to Final Fantasy Tactics or returning after a long hiatus, here are some friendly reminders, PSAs, and helpful tips to keep in mind.

Always remember to keep every character as a Squire until they learn JP Up. Square Enix’s number one rule for Final Fantasy Tactics is to “ABJPU” – always be JP-ing up. JP, or Job Points, are crucial for unlocking skills in the game’s extensive job system. While characters naturally earn more points as they rank up in a job, the JP Up skill can double that rate, allowing for faster progression. It’s tucked away on the third page of the Squire skill list under the passive section. So, hold off on switching your new recruits to other classes until you’ve unlocked this essential skill.

If you’re looking to streamline your grinding process, make sure to unlock Focus. Characters earn XP and Job Points for successful actions like dealing damage or healing. To level up quickly, stock up on potions, leave one enemy alive in battle, and take turns while keeping your party healed. Accumulate, a Squire skill that boosts your attack power, is a handy tool to have. It never misses and can be used on yourself without worrying about positioning. By having everyone learn this skill and using it at the end of random encounters, you can grind efficiently regardless of the job they’re leveling up.
