The heat wave that affects practically the entire peninsula and the Canary Islands with a sharp and progressive rise in temperatures leaves extreme highs this Sunday, between 39 and 43 degrees, in numerous cities in the south, west, central peninsula and the Canary Islands.
In the case of Madrid, the thermometers have climbed to almost 40ºC, and in the case of the mountains they have risen to 36, even up to 37 or 38ºC in mountain towns below one thousand meters of altitude.
The Aemet has activated the orange warning for high temperatures in the southern, vegas and western areas and yellow in the rest of the Community of Madrid, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. And the same warnings will be activated tomorrow, Monday in Madrid, from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with the forecast of maximum temperatures just as high and minimum temperatures even somewhat higher than this Sunday throughout the region.
By province capitals, Badajoz registers the maximum with 43 degrees followed by Córdoba with 42; Cáceres and Seville, 41; Toledo, 40; Jaén, Ourense and Madrid, 39, and between 37-38 degrees in Zamora, Salamanca, Logroño, Zaragoza, Guadalajara, Ciudad Real and Cuenca, according to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
In the Canary archipelago, throughout the day there has been a slight rise in temperatures, especially on the island of Gran Canaria where there is a red warning (extreme risk) due to maximum temperatures of up to 41 degrees, especially in middle areas facing south and this, while in Santa Cruz de Tenerife the values will rise to 39 degrees.
In the rest of the islands, except La Palma, the maximum temperatures, also high, will reach between 37 and 38 degrees in the midlands and on south-facing summit slopes and inland areas of the eastern islands.
For tonight it is expected that they will be “tropical nights”, when the minimum does not fall below 20 degrees or “torrid nights”, the thermometer marks minimum temperatures equal to or above 25 degrees; Thus, Cádiz will mark 25 degrees at dawn, Cáceres 24 degrees and Madrid, Seville and Jaén, among others, 23 degrees.
This heat wave will continue on Monday with maximum values that will rise on the coast of Granada and Almería, and will drop in the Canary Islands. and they will remain with few changes in the rest, although with a predominance of promotions; 40 degrees or more will be reached again in the Guadalquivir valley and in the interior of Huelva and western Extremadura.
Given this situation, the Aemet maintains an orange alert for Monday (significant risk) due to intense heat in 5 communities -Madrid, Andalusia, Extremadura and both Castillas- and a yellow alert in 7 communities -Aragon, Galicia, Catalonia, the Basque Country, Navarra , La Rioja and the Valencian Community-.
Regarding the situation in the Canary Islands, starting Monday, and especially Tuesday, “temperatures will drop sharply in the archipelago”, ending the episode in this Community.
The Aemet has explained that the approach of a DANA starting tomorrow from the west of the peninsula will cause the entry of African air “to further increase temperatures between Tuesday and, at least, Thursday, so it is very likely that these 3 days make up the peak period of this heat wave episode.”
At the moment, up to 7 communities -Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid and La Rioja- have activated the orange level for Tuesday’s day due to maximums that will range between 39 and 44 degrees.
