It’s the first week of July, a time between the end of E3 and the start of summer game releases. As Americans get ready to celebrate Independence Day, it’s the perfect time to relax and enjoy some top-tier speedruns. Summer Games Done Quick is back with a weeklong event where speedrunners showcase their skills in beating games quickly using various strategies, shortcuts, and glitches. The event started on Sunday and will continue until July 6, featuring streams around the clock with games ranging from recent hits to retro classics. The event also raises money for Doctors Without Borders, a charity that provides medical aid worldwide.

If you’ve missed any of the speedruns, you can catch up on the VODs uploaded to SGDQ’s Twitch and YouTube channels. Some highlights from the event include playthroughs of games like Pepper Grinder, custom Celeste maps, Sonic P-06, poker roguelite Balatro, and Metroid Fusion. Classic games like Halo 2, Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, and Silent Hill have also been featured.

But it’s not just about the games; SGDQ also includes entertaining segments that showcase the personalities of the participants. Coming up later in the week are power blocks featuring Mirror’s Edge, PowerWash Simulator, and Kaizo Mario Galaxy. The 4th of July will include Celeste 64, Halo 3, and Sekiro. One game to look out for is Animal Well, a new Metroidvania with puzzles and secrets that has received praise this year.

The event will conclude on Saturday with Baldur’s Gate 3, Elden Ring, and plenty of Mario games. Take some time out of your week to enjoy SGDQ and experience the positive energy of the gaming community. It’s a chance to appreciate the skill of the speedrunners and maybe even feel a bit of faith in humanity restored.
