Vodafone is expanding its range of services in Spain to the energy market, where it will start selling electricity starting next fall, according to Servimedia.

Apart from its central core of activity in the telecommunications sector, the British operator was until now present in Spain in the security sector together with Securitas Direct.

Now it jumps into the energy market with the creation of Vodafone Energy, a marketer of electricity obtained 100% from renewable sources.

The operator will offer its customers green electricity at market prices through the ‘Vodafone Light Rate’, which can only be contracted digitally and has no permanence regime.

This variable rate will work with hourly discrimination, which means that users will pay for the electricity service at the market price at the time of consumption, being a different price for each hour of each day, within three sections regulated in term of energy (valley, flat and peak) and two in terms of power (peak and valley), without Vodafone benefiting from higher consumption by customers.

Vodafone estimates that its new ‘Light Rate’ will allow savings of up to 25% compared to some of its competition rates.

Contracting the service, available from autumn, will be exclusive to current Vodafone private and professional customers, so they will benefit from a free monthly fee and without permanence. In case of losing the status of Vodafone telephone customer, an additional fee of 4 euros per month would be charged.

“With the launch of Vodafone Energy, we continue with our strategy of continuing to offer more value to our customers and of favoring the digital inclusion of all so that no one is left behind. With the new service we increase our presence within the home. This initiative offers energy renewable at market price so that users have the peace of mind of always paying a fair price”, explains the director of the digital unit and new lines of business at Vodafone Spain, Esther Colmenarejo. “With this rate, we also strengthen our commitment to the planet, since 100% of the energy we buy for our customers comes from 100% renewable sources,” she adds.
