Nintendo has officially added the newest Zelda game, Echoes of Wisdom, to the timeline. This game falls under the ‘Hero is defeated’ timeline, following Tri Force Heroes and before the ‘Decline of the Hyrule Kingdom’. In this adventure, Link sets out to rescue Princess Zelda from Ganon, but after defeating him, he is swallowed up by a mysterious rift, leading to a new quest for Zelda.
This addition to the timeline stems from the outcome in Ocarina of Time where the Hero of Time is defeated by Ganondorf. This outcome leads to a different series of events compared to a victory outcome, which branches into Link’s ‘child’ and ‘adult’ eras.
It’s interesting to see how Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are placed separately on the timeline. Nintendo has mentioned that they consider Zelda timelines “to an extent” during development, with gameplay often taking priority over story in the series.
