The National Police arrested on Monday a suspect in the murder of the Dutch journalist specialized in organized crime Peter R. de Vries, who was shot in the head a year ago in the center of Amsterdam, after participating in a television program.
The arrest of Gerower M. C., of Dominican origin but with a Dutch passport, is part of an operation in which two other people were also arrested in the Netherlands. According to the local press, the Prosecutor’s Office of that country suspects that the murder was commissioned by one of the criminal groups harmed by De Vries, who had sometimes testified in organized crime trials, some of them highly publicized.
The arrest took place in Sant Feliu de Llobregat (Barcelona). After the transfer to Madrid, the detainee has spent this Tuesday at the disposal of the Central Court of Instruction 1 of the National Court, which is on duty.
The purpose of the appearance before magistrate Alejandro Abascal was to inform him of the reason for the arrest and to ask him if he accepts the voluntary surrender to the authorities of the Netherlands. The response of the arrested person has been affirmative, so the measure will be executed in the next few days.
The murder of De Vries caused a stir in his country, whose government called a meeting to discuss what had happened. The journalist had come under police protection after it became known that he was on a blacklist from the Dutch drug lord and mafia leader, Ridouan Taghi.
