It’s not bad for an MMO that is eight years old.
According to SteamDB, Final Fantasy 14 had 47,542 concurrent players in the last 24 hours. This surpasses the previous record of 41.200 set by Final Fantasy 14 in June 2020 when players returned to Shadowbringers. (numbers courtesy SteamDB). These players aren’t here due to any new additions in Final Fantasy 14. Endwalker will not be available until November. Most of them are disgruntled World of Warcraft players, who have followed popular WoW streamers such as Asmongold and taken up another MMO during WoW’s lull.
The peak in player numbers occurred just a day after Asmongold started streaming it to more than two million viewers. It’s not just him, CohhCarnage has also picked it up. They, along with every WoW streamer who was dissatisfied by the 218-day wait to get the Chains of Domination update in 2021, have been enjoying a taste of the best MMO available. They seem to enjoy it so far.
Blizzard has always been able to win back WoW players by simply updating the game or expanding it. Perhaps that will happen again or maybe FF14 can hold on to these players. It’s a highly acclaimed MMORPG that offers a free trial, up to level 60, and the Heavenward expansion.
