Several Democratic legislators, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have been arrested this Tuesday during a protest in favor of the right to abortion in front of the Supreme Court of the United States.

As Efe has been able to verify, Ocasio-Cortez was handcuffed and detained by Capitol Police officers in Washington DC for blocking traffic in front of the Supreme Court. US media have pointed out that other Democratic legislators who were present at the protest were Nydia Velazquez, Carolyn Maloney, Jackie Speier and Bonnie Watson Coleman.

Last Friday, the US Lower House, controlled by Democrats, approved two bills to protect access to abortion in the country, which have little sign of progressing in the Senate, where progressives have a narrow majority. One of these initiatives supports access to voluntary termination of pregnancy by enshrining that right as federal law, and the other protects travel between states in the country to receive this intervention in places where it is allowed.

In late June, the Supreme Court struck down legal protections for abortion, overturning the 1973 “Roe v. Wade” ruling. Several Republican-controlled states have restricted or outright banned abortion since the Supreme Court ruling.
