Nintendo has taken legal action against a streamer named Jesse Keighin, also known as ‘EveryGameGuru’, for allegedly streaming pirated and emulated Switch games. Keighin reportedly promoted Switch emulators and other piracy tools to his audience, which did not sit well with Nintendo. Despite requests from the video game giant to stop, Keighin continued to stream new Switch games before their release, monetizing his content, and even bragging about his actions in a letter to Nintendo.
In the lawsuit filed by Nintendo, it is stated that Keighin boasted about having ‘a thousand burner channels’ to stream from and claimed he could continue his illegal activities all day. Nintendo alleges that Keighin streamed gameplay footage of at least ten different Nintendo games without authorization on at least fifty occasions in the last two years, before these games were officially released to the public.
One of the most recent incidents mentioned in the lawsuit is Keighin’s streaming of Mario & Luigi: Brothership on various platforms. Additionally, Keighin reportedly offered to help people find and play popular Nintendo emulators and Switch games on their PC without purchasing official Nintendo hardware.
Nintendo is seeking $150,000 per infringement of its copyright, which amounts to $7.5 million considering the fifty occasions in the last two years. The legal proceedings are ongoing, and any updates or developments will be shared with the public.
It is important for content creators and streamers to respect intellectual property rights and adhere to copyright laws to avoid legal consequences. Nintendo’s actions in this case highlight the seriousness of piracy and the protection of intellectual property in the gaming industry. It serves as a reminder to individuals in the gaming community to engage in legal and ethical practices when creating and sharing content online.
