Three adolescents, between 14 and 17 years old, members of the Barrio 18 gang, have been arrested in the Guatemalan capital while beheading a 15-year-old girl, the police reported this Saturday.

The girls were “discovered beheading a 15-year-old girl” on Friday night in a building north of Guatemala City, police spokesman Jorge Aguilar told reporters.

“Police officers patrolling the area heard the screams and immediately began searching the building where the cries for help were coming from,” Aguilar said. They entered the building when the crime was committed: one of them was holding the victim and the other was recording with his mobile phone,” added the spokesman, who specified that, despite the intervention of the police, the victim died in The place of the facts.

The Barrio 18 gang, like its rival Mara Salvatrucha, specializes in blackmailing businesses and bus companies, killing employees who refuse to pay the money demanded. Gangs and drug trafficking activities are responsible for nearly 50% of the 3,500 violent deaths recorded each year in Guatemala.
