Digital Foundry recently conducted a detailed analysis of the technical aspects involved in bringing Ace Combat 7 to the Switch. They pointed out some necessary adjustments that were made to ensure the game runs smoothly on the platform.

One noticeable change is the downgrade in foliage, with grass appearing patchier, fewer trees present, and shadows being less prominent compared to the Xbox version. Additionally, reflections have been modified, and the lighting is not as realistic, particularly affecting the cockpit view, which may look somewhat flat at times.

The resolution has also been slightly reduced, and effects like motion blur seem to be missing on the Switch. Despite these differences, Digital Foundry acknowledges that the visuals on the Switch are still impressive overall. It’s only when directly comparing with other consoles that the compromises become more apparent.

Regarding the frame rate, the Switch version maintains a steady 30fps. Digital Foundry noted minimal drops, with only one noticeable instance of lag when the plane crashed. On the other hand, the Xbox version aims for 60fps but often falls short, resulting in a choppier experience compared to the Switch.

Overall, Bandai Namco is commended for the successful transition of Ace Combat 7 to the Switch platform.
