The German police kept the deputy secretary general of the European External Action Service, the Spanish diplomat Enrique Mora, detained this Friday at the Frankfurt airport, upon his return from Tehran. The agents withdrew his diplomatic passport and his telephone number, without giving him any explanations, despite being on an official European Union mission.
This was denounced in several messages by Enrique Mora himself through his Twitter account. The right-hand man of the High Representative, Josep Borrell, assured that the actions of the German security forces seemed “a violation of the Geneva Convention”, after having been held in solitary confinement at the Frankfurt airport.
Enrique Mora was returning from Tehran (Iran) together with the EU ambassador to the UN in Vienna and the head of the European External Action Service working group for Iran. The three representatives of the 27 were in transit to Brussels, and were held separately, despite being on an official EU mission to seek progress in the Vienna talks aimed at reviving the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.
The Spanish diplomat had announced that he had traveled to Iran to meet with Bagheri Kani and other senior Iranian government officials. Furthermore, during his visit, he raised with the Iranian regime the need to stop the planned execution of the Swedish-Iranian professor, Ahmadreza Djalali.
