Disney’s Revival Era Animated Movies Ranked: From Worst to Best

Moana 2 has hit theaters, sparking controversy as it was initially planned as a Disney+ series before being reworked into a theatrical release. This sudden change may indicate a shift towards sequels over original ideas, which is disappointing. With Zootopia 2 and a third Frozen movie on the horizon, it seems like Disney is banking on established franchises rather than taking creative risks.

Looking back at Disney’s recent era, starting from Bolt in 2008, known as the “revival” era, there have been some standout films. However, not all movies have been hits. Wish, released in 2023, was meant to celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary but fell flat with its incoherent story and awkward lyrics. Despite its beautiful animation, Wish is forgettable.

Ralph Breaks the Internet, released in 2018, marked Disney’s shift towards sequels, deviating from their traditional one-movie-per-property approach. While the film had some entertaining moments, it lacked the thematic coherence of its predecessor, Wreck-It Ralph.

Bolt, often overlooked, set the stage for modern classics like Tangled and Frozen with its heartwarming story of finding joy in simplicity. Winnie the Pooh (2011) stood out as the last 2D animated Disney film, offering a refreshing departure from the studio’s usual style.

Raya and the Last Dragon, released in 2020, showcased stunning animation and action scenes but faced criticism for its portrayal of Southeast Asian culture. Despite its flaws, the film’s message of unity resonates.

The Princess and the Frog (2009) broke barriers with its Black woman protagonist and jazz-infused soundtrack, diverging from Disney’s typical princess narratives. Strange World, underrated and undermarketed, delivered captivating visuals and a compelling family narrative.

Encanto, while featuring a strong narrative on generational trauma, fell short in its music, with some songs failing to resonate. Big Hero 6 (2014) explored themes of grief and loss through the endearing character of Baymax.

Moana, a tale of self-discovery and resilience, offered empowering anthems and a compelling storyline. Tangled (2010) redefined the Disney Princess formula in 3D animation, while Frozen (2013) subverted expectations with its sisterly bond and progressive message. Frozen II (2019) further expanded on the themes of the original, solidifying its status as a modern classic.

As Disney continues to evolve its storytelling, each film in the revival era has contributed to the studio’s rich legacy, offering a mix of heartwarming tales, innovative animation, and memorable characters. Each movie has left its mark on audiences, paving the way for future Disney classics.
