Metal Slug Tactics has finally been released on the Nintendo Switch after more than three years since its initial reveal. As a turn-based tactics fan who is new to the Metal Slug series, I found the game to have some strengths and weaknesses.
The game is structured as a roguelike where you control up to three characters from the Peregrine Falcons on various missions in isometric grids. The missions feature a variety of enemies, solid bosses, and creative environment design. One interesting twist in the gameplay is the use of Adrenaline Abilities that can have devastating effects when used strategically.
Moving and attacking in the game is straightforward, with the ability to use standard shots, special weapons, and Adrenaline Abilities. The inclusion of Sync Shots, where two characters can coordinate attacks for a free hit, adds a new layer of strategy to the gameplay.
However, there are some gameplay design choices that can be frustrating, such as being unable to move after using an action. This can lead to being cornered or blocked off by enemies, making some fights difficult to win. The early hours of the game can feel oppressive and tedious, as you may not have the necessary upgrades to progress through tough missions.
The tutorial of the game is overwhelming and doesn’t do a great job of explaining the mechanics. The small text size in menus can also be a problem, especially in handheld mode. Despite these issues, the game features flawless animations, an excellent soundtrack, and visually appealing graphics.
In conclusion, Metal Slug Tactics offers a fresh take on the tactics genre with smart gameplay twists and a unique pace. While the game has its flaws and may require some effort to fully enjoy, it has the potential to be a great experience for tactics fans willing to put in the work.
