The Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM) of the Civil Guard of Arenas De San Pedro (Ávila), has rescued the lifeless body of a hiker in the Sierra de Gredos, after falling down a channel in the Los Galayos area , on the southern slope of the massif.

The event occurred last Saturday, although the Civil Guard reported it on Tuesday in a statement, when shortly before noon the Armed Institute alerted the mountain specialists to go to the “La Aguja Negra” channel, in Los Galayos, where a deceased hiker was found.

Up to that point in the municipality of Guisando, the troops of the GREIM of Arenas de San Pedro were transferred with the help of the Civil Guard Helicopter Unit based in Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid) to proceed with the rescue, due to the difficulty of the orography to access on foot.

Once at the scene, the mountain specialists certified the existence of the mountaineer’s lifeless body, which presented “a series of serious injuries incompatible with life, possibly due to having fallen down the channel.”

Given the inaccessibility of the terrain, both for the medical services and for the Judicial Commission, the mountain specialists began the rescue of the body at 2:50 p.m. and finished it at 5:40 p.m.

Subsequently, the body was transferred to the Forensic Anatomical Institute of Ávila for an autopsy.
