Wizards of the Coast is gonna be turning so much paper into gold with Magic: The Gathering, mainly through their super popular Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set. At MagicCon Atlanta 2025, the company spilled the beans that they will be dropping even more Final Fantasy box sets with new cards that got some seriously beautiful art from the Square Enix RPG franchise. If you’re worried about your wallet, don’t stress! The first batch of pre-orders were snatched up in a flash. This lil expansion includes a snazzy Chocobo Bundle, a fresh Commander Deck, and four shiny Scene Boxes. They’re all set to hit shelves on December 5 and they’re already like super impossible to snag online right now. Hopefully, fans will have better luck scoring these goodies at their local hobby shops. The Chocobo Bundle is going for $110 and comes with a whole bunch of booster packs, Chocobo-themed lands, alt-art reprints, a new promo card, and a super cool life total click-wheel that’s seriously neat-o.

New $100 FFVII Limit Break Commander Deck is also in the mix, complete with a PC download code for the HD remaster of the OG game and an exclusive Traditional Foil promo card that shows Cloud gazing up at Shinra HQ. Seems kinda steep in price, but guess what? Completely sold out on Amazon right now. Then there’s the new Scene Boxes that are really catching my eye. You got one for Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, and Final Fantasy XV. Each one comes with six Foil Borderless Scene Cards, six Art Cards, three Play Boosters, and one Display Easel for $42. The six cards piece together to recreate scenes from each game. These new cards might not be kosher for standard play, but dang, they look cool as heck. The art on the boxes alone is making me want to snag one for myself.

Back in 2023, when the Lord of the Rings Scene Boxes rolled in, there were plenty to go around, giving us some hope that after the initial frenzy chills out, fans will have a shot at getting their hands on the new Final Fantasy ones without too much hassle or having to drop mad cash on them. But are these boxes even worth it? In the grand scheme of things, probs not really. But that’s the whole point of Universes Beyond: flipping logic on its head with some real passion. It’s been a total money-maker for Wizards, but a total headache for fans. “This whole collab has been so confusing,” one fan wrote after the latest Final Fantasy products were announced. “Every time I try to buy cards, they’re all sold out everywhere, and it doesn’t seem like they’re making more. But then there’s new cards still coming out too?” Yeah, there are. And my guess is these won’t be the last ones either.

So much paper turning into gold with Magic: The Gathering, and Final Fantasy Universes Beyond leading the charge. Let’s see where this wild ride takes us next.
