After years of a constant stream of Star Wars movies and TV shows, the franchise seems to be slowing down. The latest project to face setbacks is the untitled spin-off featuring Daisy Ridley’s Rey from the Force Awakens trilogy. The movie has reportedly lost another writer, this time being Steven Knight, the creator of Netflix’s Peaky Blinders.

According to Puck News reports via Gamesradar, Knight, known for his work on the popular crime drama series, is the most recent writer to depart from the upcoming Star Wars film. The plot was supposed to follow Rey’s journey after the events of the last numbered sequel, Rise of the Skywalker. With Knight leaving the project, the potential December 2026 release date for the movie is now uncertain.

Knight had taken over writing duties after Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen) and Justin Britt-Gibson (The Strain) left the project in 2023. The film, which is set to focus on Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order years after Episode 9, was announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023 with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy as the director. Despite Obaid-Chinoy remaining involved, there have been no substantial updates on the status of the movie since then.

Daisy Ridley, who portrays Rey, remains optimistic about the project’s future. In a recent Q&A with Collider, she mentioned that things are evolving, and she is still very excited about the film. She assured fans that there would be an update on the movie soon.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is set to hit theaters in May 2026. This project serves as a substitute for the canceled fourth season of The Mandalorian and will provide fans with some Star Wars content while they await further developments on the Rey spin-off.

The uncertainty surrounding the Rey movie has left fans wondering about the future of the Star Wars franchise on the big screen. With multiple setbacks and changes in the writing team, the fate of the film remains unclear. However, the dedication of the cast and crew, including Daisy Ridley, suggests that there is still hope for the project to come to fruition. Star Wars fans will have to wait for further updates to see how the story of Rey and the Jedi Order continues to unfold.
